I'm debating where to buy a 500mm or a 600mm. Both are expensive. Both are heavy. The 600mm is very heary and rather large and likely won't get as much use as a smaller 500mm. Anyone out there have any actual field experience with BOTH lenses? If not, with one or the other.

I've used both and they are tremendous. Do I have a preference, not really, it depends what you are doing. One thing I have decided is there is no sense buying an expensive lens if you have doubts about using it. The 600 mm does have a tendency to be affected by the wind. Just my 2 cents.
